This area is of interest to tourists because of the beauty of its sights, the cordial hospitality of the people and the abundance of historical and cultural traditions. Leaving Acqui, go up the Erro valley till you reach a town called Cavatore, an old village with a 13th century watch tower; after a few kilometers you arrive in Ponzone, a medieval village. Here, on a clear day, you can admire the spectacular landscape with the Alpine chain and Monviso on the horizon. The Ponzone area is studded with villages with names that seem to come from fairy-tales: Ciglione, Caldasio, Pianlago, Cimaferle, Toleto,
Piancastagna, all surrounded by broad green valleys and thick chestnut woods. The local dishes are made up of mushrooms and cold-cuts, which are another of the characteristics of this area. After having lunch in a restaurant that serves local specialties, you might want to go for a pleasant walk through the woods to the Santuario della Pieve where you can buy crafts: wooden articles, ceramics, and dried flowers, made by the fathers of the 'Family of Bethlehem'.
