Most of the area near Grosseto extends within the Tuscan Maremma. The 130 km of coast line with beaches, pinewoods and rocky shores are broken by numerous coves that are now wide safe tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto, Talamone, Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole, Cala Galera and the harbours in the islands of Giglio and Giannutri.
All the resorts, together with Follonica and Principina a Mare, have achieved a high degree of tourist development with top class accomodation and complementary services, besides managing to preserv its own natural characteristics. The Maremma Natural Park, the lagoon of Orbetello, the lake of Burano and of Accesa, the boggy area of Diaccia Botrona as well as the numerous protected areas represent a real paradise for those who truly love Nature. The countryside, where you can still meet herdsmen following the herds on horseback, and the hills, fovourite places for brigands in the past, offer plesant hospitality. Saturrnia, Petriolo and Bagnolo di Monterotondo Marittimo, well-known for their hot springs, boast modern facilities.
Maremma also boasts an interesting artistic and cultural heritage, covering an extensive historical period. Many etruscan remains, found inside the tombs which are scattered across the whole territory, are kept in the archeological museums of Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Vetulonia and in the archeological areas of Sovana, Vetulonia and Roselle. The old towns Cosa and Roselle are examples of the Roman period. There are also extremely significant examples of Medieval art in this area, such as Massa Marittima which was a wealthy commune in the 13 th century; Pitigliano and Sorano which boast Renaissance monuments. Bot of them have their origin in the 'civilization of tuff'.
The Giardino dei Tarocchi in Capalbio is one of the main monuments of european environmental architecture. Folk traditions and festivals of the area include: the lively sailing regattas held in spring, the autumnal festivals for grapes, for chest nuts and for oil, horse riding and "Balestro del Girifalco" (archery) held at Massa Marittima which reminds of past traditions and old legends.
The Maremma coastline is on the limpid Tyrrhenian sea. Long, fine, sandy beaches and steep rocks alternate along the 130 kilometers of coastline of Grosseto. Close to the cliff, there is the luxuriant pinewood, with stone-pines (Pinus pinea) and cluster-pinus (Pinus pinaster) or the typical Mediterranean maquis made up of forest trees as the cork-oak, the bay-oak, the olm-oak and shrubs as the straweberay tree, the broom, the lentisk tree, the heather and myrtle.
