Cutrofiano is a extended municipality in the province of Lecce, in Apulia and Salento area; rich in the soil of clay and stone of agrigultural economy, of extraction and handicrafts.
At 8 km from Maglie,6 km from Galatina, Cutrofiano is one of the most extended towns of the Lecce, delimited or by the towns of: Aradeo, Galatina, Sogliano, Corigliano d'Otranto, a district of Melpignano, Maglie, Scorrano, Supersano, Collepasso, Neviano.
Cutrofiano includes a Comprende un a very big area which is like a wavy table land ploughed by many draining channels. The most important type of the area is represented by the Calcareniti of Salento, while on the south of the urban centre there are clay limestones.
So there are many open-cast mines of clay and stone of a gallery type, these last ones very interesting for the typology. (cfr. A. e D. Benegiamo, old Salento , F.lli Amato, Cutrofiano, 1993; Ligori street, Melissano street, Studies of aniquity 6, Congedo, Galatina, 1990).
