The town of Soleto is located in province of Lecce in the Salento area and its far about 20 kilometrs from the salentine chief-town.
The town is situated at the center of the Salento. The Soletum, remembered by Plinio, it is center of Messapica origins, but in this territory the human settlements was present since the prehistory. In the Middle Age absorbed the culture and the Greek ceremonies, surviving till the end of the XVI century.
After have been feud of the De Castro and of the Tussi families, at the end of the XIII century Soleto began to the County of Raimondello Del balzo Orsini, prince of Taranto and bridegroom of Maria D' Enghien. The family estinguished with Giovanni Antonio (1463), it passed to the Kingly Demanio and, afterward, to other powerful families, among which we remember that of the Castriota Scandemberg, of the Sanseverino, of the Carafa and of the Spinelli.
