The sea is the soul of the Coast of the Etruscans: it is with you everywhere. It lives in the history, in the landscape, permeates the air, illuminates the sunset. Along the shore, which is over 90 km long, beaches of fine white sand and strands of dark pebbles alternate with cliffs carved by the wind and sculptured by the sea waves. Inlets, coves and bays follow one another endlessly. Castiglioncello, San Vincenzo, Quercianella, Marina di Castagneto, Donoratico, Vada, Bibbona, Cecina, Rosignano, Baratti are famous well-equipped seaside tourist resorts immersed in the green of broad shady pinewoods.
Livorno is home to the Italian Naval Academy which is the most important maritime University on the Mediterranean. Here the first bathing establishments appeared at the end of the 19th century when people began to discover the pleasure in spending their holidays by the seaside. Wherever you go there is a quiet but stimulating atmosphere ideal for vacation. You can play your favourite sport or devote yourself to many other leisure activities. A rich sea world, home to rare fish species like those preserved in the town Aquarium, promotes fishing, photography and underwater sports. The mild climate, particularly windy in some areas, encourages sailing and windsurfing in every season.
There are many opportunities to enjoy the sea thanks to the ports of Livorno and Piombino (important destinations for the cruise traffic on the Mediterranean), tourist harbours, marinas and landing places scattered all along the coast sheltering thousands of boats. Painting exhibitions, dance performances on an international scale, local events and concerts are pleasant occasions of great interest and entertainment. The local fish cuisine is appreciated all over the world. The cacciucco and triglie alla livornese are the most popular local fish dishes.
