The province of Siena is situated in the south-central part of the Tuscany and it borders on the provinces of Arezzo, Firenze, Pisa and Grosseto. Siena, of etruscan origin, placed in an hilly area, is an other famous city of art. Big trade centre (in Siena, in 1624, was founded one of the earliest italian banks: the famous Monte dei Paschi), Siena draws every year millions of tourists, attracted by the famous ‘Palio’ and by the aschitectural monuments. Among them, we must enumerate the Public Palace, the Tower of the Mangia, the Duomo and the Baptistery. Near Siena are placed the celebrated San Gimignano, which has preserved its characteristic medieval appearance, Chianciano Terme, well-known health spa, and Montepulciano, important wine centre.

Siena is surrounded by olive trees and Chianti’s vineyards and it is one of the most enchanting cities of Tuscany. Siena rises over the top of three hills and it’s characterised by small and tiny streets which bring to Piazza del Campo, the heart of the city, and to other wonderful important monuments like the Duomo and the Spedale (Hospital) of Santa Maria della Scala.
The city is famous all over the world for the well-known ‘Palio’, old festival and horserace which takes place every year the second of July and the 16th of August. Siena, especially in summer, is very rich in cultural happenings, concerts, cinemas and theatres. Siena is also the seat of one of the oldest universities of Europe.

The land sorrounding Siena is various and very pleasant. In the northern part of this land we can find the Chianti area, famous all over the world for its olive trees and vineyards and for the medieval towns with boundary walls, like san Gimignano and Monteriggioni. The Chianti zone, placed between Florence and Siena, is one of the most enchanting country areas of Italy.
To the south of Siena, in the valley of Arbia, we can find the town of Montalcino, where is produced the famous wine known as Brunello di Montalcino.
In the western part of the province of Siena, we can find some enchanting towns close to the sea, like for example Castiglione della Pescaia, as well as the natural reserve of the Maremma district.

Visiting Siena, the tourist will be able to find wonderful and uncontaminated places, rich in colours and scents which surround Siena and the small medieval towns, places of production of valuable wines well-known all over the world.

The hystorical and cultural centre of the city is Piazza del Duomo, where you can immediately note the huge Cathedral of Santa Naria Assunta, built over a preexistent 12th -century religious building. Afterwards, the inhabitants of Siena began to account this original cathedral as inadequate for the growing splendour of the city; also by reason of the rivality with the bordering Florence, which was building its huge Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the government of Siena decided to enlarge the project with a view to creating the biggest cathedral in Europe. The plan was approved and the works began in 1339, even if the construction of the ‘New Duomo’ suffered some stops because of the famous terrible plague in 1346 and the consequent economic crisis suffered by the city; the works were gradually restarted and the new cathedral was finished in 1376. The interior of the church is rich in fine works of art, like stuccos, statues, frescoes and paintings of different ages, created by very celebrated artists, like Duccio di Buoninsegna, Donatello and Michelangelo.

On the side of the cathedral, you can admire the Romanesque Campanile (Bell-Tower), built over a preexistent turret.
The wonderful Piazza del Campo (whose constrution began in 1327 and finished in 1349) is named after the presence of a wide field in this area. This square has a semicircular shape and was realized linking three hills and creating some slopes and holes which form a masterpiece of harmony and naturalness. In Piazza del Campo is organized every year the famous ‘Palio’, a show much loved by the inhabitants of Siena; the town districts compete in an horserace inside of a sand fence opportunely installed in the square.

In this square, you could admire the Torre of the Mangia and the Public Palace (also known as the Town Hall of Siena), built in XII-XVII centuries. You could also visit the wonderful Renaissance Piccolomini Palace.
Finally, we can counsel you to visit the Loggia della Mercanzia, the National Pinacotheca, the Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana del Duomo and the Civic Museum of the Town Hall.
