Trapani is a city and municipality on the west coast of Sicily in the southern of Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Trapani. Founded by Elymians, the city is still an important fishing port and the main gateway to the nearby Egadi Islands.
The town of Mothya, founded at the end of the VIII cen. b.C., is similar to other Phoenician settlements. Actually, it is on a small island, near to the coast and surrouded by shoals which ensure a good defence against enemy attacks and at the same time a safe ship berth.
The fact that the Greek colonies were close to it, caused many wars which destroied Mothya also at the hands of Dionysius tyrant of Syracuse in 397 b.C..
Mozia: The fortifications. Mozia was well guarded by walls and by watch towers, which flank the length of the walls along; there were two gates: Northen Gate and the Southern Gate which are still in good conditions.
Mozia: The way to mainland. The construction of the walls forbade the use of the arcaic necropolis to burn. Maybe for this reason since then, the hinabitants of Mothya started to take their dead to the mainland through the road bank, whose foundations can be still seen on the sea bed.
The road bank was almost two kilometre long, its width allowed the passage of two carts at the same time, to reach the nearby Sicilian coast. It links the Northern Gate to Birgi, on the mainland where Mr. Whitaker discovered several sarcophagi. Its position made the island a place of passage for trading towards Spain, Sardinia and central Italy.
Mozia: the Tophet. The Tophet is an open air place of sacrifice. It is a sanctuary where vases or urns, containing sacrified cremated remains of the dead (the ashes), were placed.
Mozia: The urban planning area. Only two houses of the ancient city were brought to light: The house of mosaics and The house of the amphoras.
