Varese is one city of Gaulish origin. In medioevale age it made part of the Peasantry of the Seprio; to its fall, it passed under the domination of Milan.
It was "Common free" (for right granted from Carl V in 1538) until 1765; divenne Lordship of Francisco III of Este (the duca of Modena) until its dead women (1780) after returned Common.

Not to forget, moreover, the important historical centers of Castelseprio and Castiglione Olona, rich of monuments and works of art.
