The Cinque Terre is a particular area of coast in the region Liguria, in the north of Italy, on the Italian Riviera (west of the province of La Spezia). The Cinque Terre (or The Five Lands) comprises five little cityes and ancient fishing villages: Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Manarola, Corniglia and Riomaggiore.
This area, the area of Cinque terre is a part of the Cinque Terre National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Cinque Terre is a touristic area noted for its many beauties. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside. It is one of the most famous tourist destination in Italy.
In 1998 become the Protected natural marine area Cinque Terre in order to protect the natural environment and to promote socio-economical development compatible with the natural landscape of the area.
In 1999 was founded the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre to conserve the ecological balance, protect the landscape, and safeguard the anthropological values of the location.
