Orta Lake

So many images and emotions have been aroused by the surface, somewhat mysterious, of this lake. In every season the Orta lake offers the best of itself, so you can discover its charm from different points of view. In wintertime the snow-peaked mountains make an ideal backdrop for the lake.

There are ski-slopes, with splendid panoramas and modern lift facilities for moments of excitement and, for those who do not ski, moments of relaxation. Along the lake shore you will discover the mild climate, which is ideal for relaxing walks, a perfect conclusion outdoors in the fresh air, after a day of shopping for crafts, sightseeing and a good lunch.

Lake Orta, the ancient 'Cusius', is to the west of Lake Maggiore. It abounds in history and old monuments and is surrounded by gentle rolling hills. It has excellent hotels and campgrounds. Among the major localities that stand out are Orta San Giulio, with its characteristic piazza, the 'palazotto' (small palace) which dates back to 1582 and the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mount) with its twenty chapels dedicated to the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.

On the lake you will see the unmistakable shape of the island of San Giulio, with its Romanesque basilica from the 12th century, the frescoes and the ambo of Oira stone. History and art can also be appreciated in Pettenasco, where the 'medieval house' and the church of St. Catherine stand. Omegna, today an important industrial and trade center, has kept intact its old frescoes in the parish church which dates back to the 13th century. On the western shore, after S. Maurizio d’Opaglio, the road goes back up to the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso (Our Lady of the Stone) at an altitude of 1,748 m, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view.
